More than 450 scientists in different institutions are working on burning issues in the area of cybersecurity research. Acknowledging the innovative ecosystem, the Federl Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy appointed Darmstadt as the national Digital Hub Cybersecurity with the objective of supporting start-ups and companies to tap into this expertise whilst creating viable business models.
Successful entrepreneurship has a long track record in CyberSecValley and various initiatives aim to tickle the entrepreneurial spirit event amongst students. One of the most exciting, aspirational and successful ones is HIPA, the Hessian Israeli Partnership Accelerator for Cybersecurity. Launched in 2017, HIPA is an initiative that connects Darmstadt’s CyberSecValley with Israel, one of the leading cybersecurity nations, that has also a vibrant start-up scene. The program accelerates the cybersecurity research collaboration between these two regions. HIPA was launched by Fraunhofer SIT and Hebrew University of Jerusalem HUJI and turned out to be an incredible success both for participants and industry partners Allianz and CISCO. The results of the participant’s joint research are being published; and Allianz and Cisco are interested in a further development of some of the products. Here’s a quick recap of the 1st wave of HIPA.

The program
HIPA brings together students of computer science and engineering with top cybersecurity talents from Israel and Germany. Participants will jointly work on cutting edge cybersecurity projects in areas such as network technologies, internet infrastructure and software security. This will speed up the development of new technological ideas in Cybersecurity and Privacy, while connecting young entrepreneurs and students with researchers, advisors, customers and influencers.
The program starts with one week of entrepreneurship training and technology lectures in Jerusalem, Israel, that lays the foundation for two months of targeted development. The results are reviewed and finalized in one week of applied technology training in Darmstadt, Germany‘s official Cybersecurity Hub. The results will be presented at a cybersecurity conference in front of enterprise and government representatives in Berlin.
The goal
HIPA aims at improving the chance of success for cyber security start-ups. To achieve this, the participating cyber security talents are dealing with real questions from economy and society. These challenges are chosen by industry partners as well as Fraunhofer SIT and HUJI. The challenges represent current and urgent security issues, whose solution may lead to marketable products and services. The participants receive intensive professional and methodical training and mentoring, and learn how to combine and use the different German and Israeli approaches.
